After 60 years, the sun is finally setting on everyone’s favorite mid-size sedan–the Chevy Malibu.

2025 will mark the final year for the Malibu, a vehicle that has withstood the test of time thanks to its incredible attention to comfort and stability. Paired with an affordable price tag, the Malibu is poised to deliver awe-inspiring refinement in its final moments.

Grab your beach chairs and get cozy in the sand as we reflect on a history that spans over five decades, and find out what’s in store for the Chevy Malibu’s final farewell.

Remembering the Chevy Malibu

With a life that spans almost five decades, it comes as no surprise that the mid-size sedan we know and love today looked a bit different at the height of its career.

The Chevy Malibu Muscle Car?

In its early years, the Chevy Malibu did not always compete with family-friendly sedans like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. In fact, the Malibu began its name as a rear-drive hot rod.

Born during the era of the muscle car, the Malibu nameplate was introduced in 1964 as a top-of-the-line subseries of the Chevelle. With body styles including a four-door sedan, two-door sport coupe and convertible, and a two-seat station wagon, the Chevy Malibu was about as diverse as they come.

As the Malibu gained traction, it found itself within the NASCAR circuit, even earning a place in the winner’s circle 25 times!

Dark Days, Hard Times, and a 14-Year Hiatus

Despite its time in the winner’s circle, the Malibu couldn’t stray far from the complications that would arise a year later.

In 1978, downsizing forced Chevy to discontinue their entire Chevrolet lineup. The Malibu, however, was the only vehicle to make it out unscathed. The following generation of the Malibu had undergone some major changes, including a shortened body style and a reconfiguration that left it 500 pounds lighter than previous models.

Despite added storage space and increased fuel efficiency, the hard times finally caught up to the Malibu, forcing Chevy to discontinue the sedan in 1983.

For the next 14 years, not a whisper of the Malibu’s whereabouts or thoughts on resurgence were spoken.

Then, in 1997, the Chevy Malibu was awoken.

North American Car of the Year

The fifth generation of the Malibu welcomed a redesigned body and style, complete with an introduction of the front-wheel drive layout that would continue for the Malibu series in the years to follow.

Over the years, the Malibu has been witness to a number of modifications and advancements, from the introduction of the model’s first hybrid option to enhanced safety features specifically geared towards young drivers.

From being named 1997’s Car of the Year by Motor Trend to being awarded the North American Car of the Year in 2008, the Chevy Malibu has made its mark in automotive history.

While we may be saying goodbye to a long-standing history of the Chevy Malibu, it is a vehicle that won’t be easily replaced.

The Standard for Comfort and Consistency

The Chevy Malibu may no longer be the hot-rod from its early days, but with age comes a certain level of wisdom and maturity.

Power and Performance

The Chevy Malibu is a steadying force behind the wheel. With a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood, the Malibu delivers a steady and responsive 160 horsepower at every turn.

The Malibu prides itself on helping you enjoy the journey ahead with a respectable fuel economy. The Chevy Malibu can reach 28 mpg in the city, and an estimated 36 MPG on the highway–meaning less time at the pump and more time behind the wheel.

Chevy Malibu Interior and Design Elements

What the Chevy Malibu may lack in certain luxury amenities, it makes up for in comfort and ergonomic design. Power lumbar control in the driver and front passenger seat allow for extra support on long-haul adventures, while the large opening underneath the center stack makes the cockpit feel spacious and comfortable.

Look as good on the outside as you feel on the inside with three special edition packages, including:

  • Midnight Edition: offers all-black exterior features
  • Sport Edition: black exterior features to boost the sporty nature of the ride
  • Redline Edition: add a pop of color and confidence with special red accents

Confidence Starts with Safety

The 2025 Chevy Malibu sets the standard for comfort and confidence, beginning with a suite of advanced safety features.

Safety features to help every driver feel confident on the road include:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Front pedestrian braking
  • Forward collision alert
  • Following distance indicator
  • IntelliBeam high beam assist
  • Lane keep assist with lane departure warning
